Ingredients

2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 packed cup basil sprigs (about 1 ounce), plus extra small sprigs for garnish
3/4 cup fresh lime juice (from 6 to 8 limes)
3 1/2 cups water, divided
Ice, for serving
Lime wedges, for garnish

Instructions

In a small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and 1/2 cup water.
Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently until the sugar has completely dissolved.
Remove the saucepan from the heat.
Add the basil sprigs and stir until fully submerged in the syrup.
Let the mixture steep at room temperature until cooled, about 20 minutes.
Strain the basil syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher, discarding the basil solids.
Stir in the fresh lime juice and the remaining 3 cups of water.
Fill glasses with ice and pour the basil limeade over the top.
Garnish with fresh basil sprigs and lime wedges before serving.

Notes

Fresh lime juice provides the brightest and most vibrant flavor.
Roll limes firmly on the countertop before juicing to maximize juice yield.
Purple basil can be used for a beautiful pink-tinted limeade.
Adjust sweetness by adding more water for a lighter flavor or more syrup for a sweeter drink.
For an adult beverage, add a splash of vodka or gin before serving.
