Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 12 oz spaghetti pasta
  • Water (for boiling pasta)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onions and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
  6. Simmer sauce on low heat for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti pasta in salted boiling water according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  8. Serve meat sauce over cooked spaghetti and top with grated Parmesan or fresh basil if desired.

Notes

  • Swap ground beef with turkey or Italian sausage for variation.
  • Add vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms for a chunkier sauce.
  • Add a splash of red wine for deeper flavor or sugar to balance acidity.
  • Store sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
