A gooey, cheesy twist on a classic! This sloppy joe grilled cheese is packed with bold flavor and served on crispy garlic Texas toast—pure comfort food.
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, diced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon BBQ seasoning (or your favorite rub)
1 teaspoon salt, pepper, and garlic blend (or seasoning of choice)
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 package frozen garlic Texas Toast (8 slices)
8 slices American cheese (or cheddar)
Cook the Onions:
Heat olive oil on a griddle or skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and seasoning blend. Cook until onions are soft and golden.
Cook the Beef:
Add ground beef to the onions. Sprinkle with BBQ seasoning and cook, breaking up the meat, until fully browned. Mix the onions and beef together.
Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce:
Stir in ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened and flavorful.
Toast the Bread:
Place frozen Texas Toast slices directly on the griddle or skillet. Toast for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
Build the Sandwiches:
Top each slice of toast with a slice of cheese. Add a generous scoop of the sloppy joe mixture to half the slices, then top with another slice of cheese and a second piece of toast.
Grill the Sandwiches:
Lower heat and grill each sandwich for 1–2 minutes per side, until the cheese is melted and gooey.
Serve:
Slice sandwiches in half and serve immediately while hot.
American cheese melts best, but cheddar adds sharp flavor—mix and match for your favorite combo.
For extra richness, brush the toast with melted butter before grilling.
Serve with pickles, chips, or a simple salad for a complete meal.
