  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or whole milk (plus more for brushing)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 23 tablespoons fresh orange juice (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in orange zest.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk egg, cream, and vanilla extract. Add to flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  6. Turn dough onto a floured surface, knead gently a few times, then shape into a 1-inch thick circle. Cut into 8 wedges.

  9. Whisk powdered sugar and orange juice to make glaze. Drizzle over warm scones and let set before serving.

Notes

  • Add dried cranberries or white chocolate chips for variation.
  • Sprinkle coarse sugar on top before baking for extra crunch.
  • Substitute whole milk or half-and-half if needed.
  • Dough can be shaped and refrigerated overnight for baking the next day.
  • Scones freeze well; wrap individually and reheat when needed.
