Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, combine ground beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined; set aside.
  3. Prepare macaroni and cheese: melt butter over medium heat in a saucepan. Stir in flour and cook 1 minute to form roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk and cook until sauce thickens.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  6. Combine cooked macaroni with cheese sauce; set aside.
  7. Spread half the mac and cheese evenly in baking dish.
  8. Shape meat mixture over mac and cheese layer, pressing gently.
  9. Spread remaining mac and cheese over meatloaf layer.
  10. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese on top.
  11. Bake 45-50 minutes until meatloaf is cooked through and cheese is golden and bubbly.
  12. Let casserole rest 10 minutes before serving.
