Ingredients

  • 12 oz bow tie (farfalle) pasta
  • 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy, casings removed)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (14–15 oz) crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the bow tie pasta in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage and cook, breaking it up, until browned and cooked through.
  3. Add chopped onion and garlic to the skillet. Cook until softened and fragrant, about 3–4 minutes.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Simmer for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Reduce heat and stir in heavy cream. Simmer for another 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Add cooked pasta to the skillet and toss until well coated in the sauce.
  7. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh herbs before serving.

Notes

  • Use chicken or turkey sausage for a lighter version.
  • Add spinach, mushrooms, or sun-dried tomatoes for extra texture and flavor.
  • Stir in cream cheese or mozzarella for a more decadent sauce.
  • Use broth and non-dairy milk for a dairy-free alternative.
  • Freeze leftovers in portions and thaw overnight before reheating.
