Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons flour (or 1 tablespoon cornstarch for gluten-free)
  • 2 cups beef broth or stock
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil
  • 2 lbs potatoes (russet or Yukon gold), peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for mash)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup sour cream, chopped chives or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Peel and chop potatoes. Boil in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.
  2. While potatoes cook, season ground beef with salt and pepper. Brown in a skillet with butter or oil, breaking apart, about 5–6 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, 3–4 minutes. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  4. Sprinkle flour over beef mixture, stir and cook for 1 minute.
  5. Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking. Add Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened, about 5–7 minutes. Season to taste.
  6. Drain potatoes. Return to pot and mash with milk, butter, and optional sour cream until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Scoop mashed potatoes onto plates. Top with beef and gravy. Garnish with chives or parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Add mushrooms for earthy depth with the onions.
  • Stir in red wine or tomato paste for an Italian flavor profile.
  • Serve over cauliflower mash for a low-carb option.
  • Add cayenne or hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Reheat gently with broth or milk to refresh texture.
