Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread or brioche (preferably day-old), sliced or cubed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp corn syrup or maple syrup
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Optional: powdered sugar, fresh berries for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar and corn syrup over medium heat, stirring until smooth. Pour mixture into the bottom of the dish.
  3. Layer sliced or cubed bread over the caramel base in the dish.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, and salt.
  5. Pour custard evenly over the bread, pressing gently to soak.
  6. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for at least 6 hours.
  7. Remove from fridge and preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, until golden and custard is set.
  9. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Top with powdered sugar or fresh berries if desired.
