Ingredients

  • 1 large French bread or Italian loaf
  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef (ribeye, sirloin, or shaved steak)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper (green or red), thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
  • 68 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 23 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cut the top off the loaf and hollow out the center, leaving a 1-inch shell. Set aside removed bread.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms (if using) until soft. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Push veggies aside and add beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, then mix everything together. Remove from heat.
  5. Mix melted butter with garlic and brush inside the loaf.
  6. Layer cheese slices inside the loaf, then fill with beef and vegetable mixture. Top with more cheese and cheddar if using.
  7. Wrap loaf loosely in foil and bake for 15–20 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 5 minutes until cheese is bubbly and top is golden.
  8. Cool slightly, slice into portions, and garnish with parsley.

Notes

  • Use different cheeses like pepper jack or Swiss for variety.
  • Spice it up with jalapeños or spicy cheese.
  • Leftover roast beef or deli steak can speed up prep.
  • Drizzle with cheese sauce for extra richness.
  • Let filling cool slightly before assembling to avoid soggy bread.
