Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose or bread flour
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter or oil (melted)

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter.
  3. Mix until a rough dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan.
  6. Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, until it reaches above the edge of the pan.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Swap half the flour with whole wheat for a heartier loaf.
  • Add seeds or nuts for extra texture and nutrition.
  • Incorporate cheese, garlic, or herbs for a savory twist.
  • Brush with melted butter after baking for a soft, glossy crust.
  • Freeze sliced bread for convenient single servings.
