Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or stew beef, if preferred)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) French onion soup
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh thyme or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until caramelized and golden brown, about 15–20 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  4. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Pour in French onion soup, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine.
  6. Bring to a gentle boil, then add egg noodles.
  7. Cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until noodles are tender and have absorbed some of the sauce.
  8. If desired, sprinkle cheese on top, cover, and let it melt for 1 minute.
  9. Garnish with chopped thyme or parsley before serving.
